Lavana Hotel Chiangmai

Lavana Hotel Chiangmai is a 4-star hotel set in the real heart of the old city of Chiang Mai, right on Rachadamnoen Road and just 80 metres from the golden temple of Wat Phra Singh. Its location is its strongest card: guests rate it an outstanding 9.5, with most landmarks, temples and markets within a short walk of the front door.

Despite its central position, the hotel feels relaxed and resort-like. There is an outdoor swimming pool to cool off after a day of sightseeing, an on-site restaurant and a bar with a dedicated pool bar, plus a 24-hour front desk, a tour desk for booking trips and free WiFi throughout. An elevator serves the upper floors and the whole property is non-smoking.

Accommodation comes in two refined room types, both air-conditioned with city views, a flat-screen TV, a fridge, a kettle and a private bathroom: a comfortable Deluxe Twin Room and a larger Deluxe Suite featuring its own hot tub. It is an easy base for couples and culture-focused travellers who want comfort, a pool and the old city on their doorstep.

Location and what to see

Lavana Hotel Chiangmai sits on Rachadamnoen Road, the main artery of Chiang Mai's old city, a 1.6 km square of streets ringed by a moat and ancient walls founded in 1296 by King Mangrai as the capital of the Lanna kingdom. The setting earns a near-perfect 9.5 from guests, and for good reason: most of what visitors come to see is within an easy walk.

Just 80 metres away stands Wat Phra Singh, the city's most revered temple, home to the Phra Buddha Sihing image and open daily from around 6:00 to 17:00 (a small donation is asked of foreign visitors for the Lai Kham hall). Even closer to the door, every Sunday the hotel's own street becomes the Sunday Walking Street, the city's most famous market, where roughly a kilometre of Rachadamnoen Road fills with handicrafts, art and street food such as Khao Soi from late afternoon until about 22:30.

A short stroll reaches the Three Kings Monument and the City Arts & Cultural Centre (90 THB, closed Mondays), which tells the story of the Lanna kingdom inside a restored colonial building. Dozens of temples, including Wat Chedi Luang, lie within the walls. The old city is best explored on foot, while flat-rate red songthaews (about 30 THB) or a Grab car handle longer trips.

The best months to visit are November to February, when the air is cool and clear and the Yi Peng lantern festival lights up the city in early November. It is wise to avoid March and April, the hot "burning season", when agricultural haze settles over the region. Chiang Mai International Airport is about 3 km away, roughly a ten-minute drive.
